MUJI @ Bangkok i'm coming ah !!!!

Central gets the Muji contract

Central Department Store has become the sole distributor in Thailand for the Japanese Muji brand.

It expects to reap Bt5 million-Bt6 million in monthly sales from the first Muji outlet to be opened at its Central Chidlom mall in Bangkok.

President Yuwadee Chirathivat yesterday said the shop required an investment of more than Bt40 million for its decoration and inventory. Initially, about 3,000 items will be displayed at the 400-square-metre store, including male and female clothing, accessories, bags, stationery and home appliances. The products will appeal to people of all ages.

"We have spent a year negotiating for the distributorship," Yuwadee said. "The Muji brand matches the lifestyles of Thais who prefer simple but functional items. Remarkably, there are a number of regular patrons of this brand in Thailand. We are confident of marketing success."

Muji has 298 branches in Japan, plus 51 outlets in 12 countries including the United Kingdom, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and China.

Within three to five years, Central will open about five more outlets in Thailand and each will require a minimum investment of Bt40 million.

The second will be unveiled next month at Zen Department Store, to be followed by Central's outlets in Bang Na and Pinklao.

Yuwadee said consumers were now spending again, albeit cautiously, after a quiet two months.

"We are optimistic that next year purchasing power will improve due to the general election," she said.
